Analysis Of The Poem Never Need An American Look Beyond...
1. Why does Irving say on page 28 ââ¬Å"never need an American look beyond his own country for the sublime and beautiful of natural sceneryâ⬠? Irving explains how beautiful America is, and its no need to find beauty other places, when the beauty is here in your own country. He describes the beauty of his native home and he will always be a true American. 2. How does Irving describe Europe? He describes Europe as a rich, refine, and a country engulfed in high society. He believes European men exemplify greatness. 3. Put this in your own words, ââ¬Å"for there is nothing so baleful to a small man as the shade of a great one.â⬠There is nothing so intimidating to a small man from America than standing in the shadows of a prosperous man from Europe. 4. Which characters are more sympathetic? Diedrich Knickerbocker. Why? Knickerbocker shows sympathy in the end because itââ¬â¢s hard to believe that a person can be in a deep sleep for twenty years and regains consciousness. Heââ¬â¢s heard other stories that are odd but true. 5. How does Irving characterize Rip? Irving characterizes Rip as a meek mild tempered henpecked man with no backbone. Use specific examples from the story. On page 30, he states, ââ¬Å"I have observed that he was a simple good natured man; he was moreover a kind neighbor, and an obedient, henpecked husband.â⬠6. How does he characterize Dame Van Winkle? He characterizes Damn Van Winkle as a nagging controlling termagant of a wife. Use specific examples from the story. It has been postulated that poets such as Ciardi have been damaged psychologically by what they have seen and felt. In his case much of the evidence for this lies in his abandonment of his war diary, leaving it unfinished. Readers derive meaning from the unwritten words and see it as evidence of the concept that war is an exclusive experienceRead MoreAmerican Literature11652 Words à |à 47 PagesAmerican Literature through Time To find out more about a particular literature time period, click on the links below: ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ Puritan Times Rationalism/Age of Enlightenment American Renaissance/Romanticism Gothic Realism Naturalism Modernism Harlem Renaissance Postmodernism Contemporary Puritan Times period of American Literature - 1650-1750 Content: ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ errand into the wilderness be a city upon a hill Christian utopia Genre/Style: ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ ï⠷ sermons, diaries personalRead MoreEssay about Isolation and Nature in the Works of Robert Frost3175 Words à |à 13 Pagesacademics, artists, ordinary people both male and female - together into lecture halls and at poetry readings across the country.1 An eloquent, witty, and, above all else, honest public speaker, Frostââ¬â¢s readings imbued his poetry with a charismatic resonance beyond that of the words on paper, and it is of little surprise that people gathered to listen. I wrote this in about half an hour. Both poems are very similar, and have the same topic - City Planning - as shown in their titles. Structurally, they are different though, and the tone differs in places.
