Vietnam War Timeline The Vietnam War (otherwise called the Second Indochina War and the American War in Viet Nam) was an outgrowth of contentions between the colonizing French powers in Vietnam bolstered by Bao Dais Vietnamese National Army (VNA) and the socialist powers drove by Ho Chi Minh (the Viet Minh) and Vo Nguyen Giap. The Vietnam War itself started in 1954 when the United States and different individuals from the Southeast Asia Treat Organization were brought into the contention. It would not end until 20 years after the fact, with the fall of Saigon to the Communists in April 1975. January 1950: The Viet Minh get military counselors and weapons from China. July 1950: The United States vows $15 million worth of military guide to France to enable its soldiers to battle in Vietnam. 1950â€1953: Communist takeover in China and the war in Korea makes worry in the West that Southeast Asia would be a risky Communist fortification. The Second Indochina War Begins May 7, 1954: The French endure a conclusive destruction at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. July 21, 1954: The Geneva Accords makes a truce for the tranquil withdrawal of the French from Vietnam and gives a brief limit among North and South Vietnam at the seventeenth equal.
